Hole Opens up on Business Route 6

DICKSON CITY, Pa.--- Blame the rain! That is what PennDOT officials are saying after a hole opened up on busy Business Route 6 in Dickson City.

"I like can't even believe that! It's pretty crazy that the road would be caving in because of all the rain. You think the roads would be a little bit better conditioned, but you know, it is what it is,” said Victoria Andres of Dunmore.

According to PennDOT, the asphalt in a westbound lane near the Viewmont Mall began to crack because of runoff from nearby businesses Tuesday afternoon.

"All of the water from this area where we're standing right now goes into a ditch that travels alongside the road. That ditch collapsed and all of that water went underneath the road and ended up coming up the other side and that's what created the issue out there,” said James May, a PennDOT spokesman.

The lane is closed until it can be fixed.

Repairs are expected to begin Wednesday morning and take until late afternoon.

“It's a very busy area, especially with people coming out from the mall and we drove by there yesterday and the water was really rushing down, so that's gonna be a problem,” said Sharon Grundman of Clarks Summit.

"That's very dangerous, that's a car accident waiting to happen and if there's little kids involved, that's even worse. We're gonna continue to get more rain after rain after rain, so yeah, I could see it happening,” said Danielle Toomey of Scranton.
