Who is Florida school shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz?

PARKLAND, Fla. – Nikolas Cruz, the 19-year-old man suspected of gunning down at least 17 people Wednesday at a Parkland, Florida, high school, had once been expelled from the school for disciplinary reasons, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said.

Hours after the gunman opened fire on students and staff near the end of the day at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, details began to emerge about the former student behind one of the 10 deadliest mass shootings in modern US history.

Here is what is known about the suspect so far:

'Disturbing' digital profile

Cruz was expelled from the high school for unspecified disciplinary reasons, said officials, who provided different spellings of Cruz's first name throughout the day.

Officials are examining Cruz's digital profile, which contained what Israel described as "very, very disturbing" content.

Arrested without incident

Cruz was taken into custody without incident in nearby Coral Springs after the shootings, according to Israel.

The suspect has been talking to investigators, according to a law enforcement source.

Heavily armed

Police said Cruz was armed with multiple magazines and at least one AR-15 style rifle.

Law enforcement sources told CNN the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is tracing the.223 caliber, AR-15 style firearm used in the shootings.

Suspect sought higher death toll

Investigators believe the suspect pulled the school's fire alarm to draw people out and get a higher death toll, according to a law enforcement source.

There had been a fire drill at the school earlier in the day, leading some to believe at first that the afternoon incident was another drill, a student told CNN affiliate WSVN. "Everyone just started freaking out."

"But then word started going around that it was shots and not just, like, something else, everyone just started running towards the canal," the student said.

    • Warning signs - stifled

If the article is accurate, it states that he was identified previously as a potential threat and has been ‘trouble’ for some time. But our bleeding heart liberal friends and the ACLU would call this bullying and profiling-heaven forbid we do that…

      • trucker

Especially disturbing considering it has happened before.
At the Garland Texas attack against Pam Geller the FBI had an agent on site, had told the shooter to “tear up Texas” and then fled when the real cops showed up.

Who cares about the “digital profile” this is another jerk who had easy access to a gun that could kill many people quickly. Something needs to be done, because doing nothing isn’t working.

    • Yeah, that’ll work...

Lots of people have easy access to guns, knives, cars, trucks, pressure cookers, ammonium nitrate, acid, etc. What’s your point?

    • Warning signs - stifled

Well, maybe if more people paid attention to his digital profile (and we’re allowed to do something about it) we wouldn’t be having this debate.

      • JessicaInWilliamsport

You’re right, I think the FBI should start infiltrating these militias and alt-right groups. Might make us all safer.

  • Tim Kistler

well, we know he did it and went insane. So why is he still alive and able to breath the air we breath after he willingly went to that school to kill innocent kids and adults? Lets go back to the ‘eye for an eye’. If beyond a reasonable doubt and you willing admit your guilty, you get the same punishment. Murder someone, your sentence, death…i mean right after the sentence, you go die…none of this waiting 15 years on death row eating and sleeping and getting to read books and conversate with people and waste taxpayer money. You die, plain and simple.

Stopping these events in the US is a generational issue. Guncontrol on its own, will achieve nothing. People will move to improvised RPGs and flame throwers. Sort the cause not the symptom. What you have is a dysfunctional society with large sections having bat s&^% religious beliefs where common sense and rationality go to the wall. The first step would be to dump religion and realise that super heroes do not exist. Individuals are 100% responsible for the society they make and their future. Then build in respect for each other and the rule of law. Have free health care for all including mental health services. Treat veterans with respect and look after them. The money is there. Cut back the unnecessary military spending and invest in the country and its citizens. Reduce the perceived need for gun ownership. As I said generational. Do nothing as of now and there will be no end to random killings. I would even question the need to report them anymore.

    • Dump religion

‘The first thing to do is to dump religion’. Well Einsteinium, that’s pretty much been done for quite some time now, which explains why we’re experiencing what we are today. We’ve removed any form of faith and morality, the traditional family unit has been destroyed, and it seems the majority of people are OK with that. Then we scratch our collective heads and wonder why kids have no respect for life and nothing to live for. Duh…

      • trucker

We did. It is now a crime to post “Thou shalt not commit murder”. Atheists own the school system, they should man up and own the results.

      • Truth

Well said, Trucker. They don’t like what they see in the mirror, so they just bury their heads and try to blame someone else.

    • 🤔

You say dump religion? Are you aware that the faculty in school can’t even mention God or even say Jesus? They can’t even say God bless you when someone sneezes. Some schools even took God out of the pledge of allegiance. This is why this world is the way it is. You take Good out of everything and the world basically goes to hell. When God was in the schools and everywhere else, you didn’t have all of this craziness going on. We can thank Obama for all of this. He’s the one that made it illegal to mention God in schools and other places.

    • 🤔

Keep in mind the pledge of allegiance states one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Indivisible means can’t be divided or separated. Well guess what, look at this nation. It’s more separated now than it ever has been. Because no one acknowledges God anymore. With out Him, there is nothing but trouble.

      • JessicaInWilliamsport

Interesting…. seems to me the division started when we started inserting god in to everything because we were afraid of the commies. The original pledge (written by a socialist minister) didn’t have god anywhere near it, let alone in it. You can even see film of porky pig reciting the original. The greatest generation did just fine without god inserted into everything….. So I’d argue that we should “go back” to those golden years.

      • 😟

Well, when I was in school, there was NEVER any issues like there is today. No one had a problem with God and things were fine. Now, everyone says get rid of God and look at the world around us. It’s complete turmoil. God s not in everything like he used to be cuz now a days ” it’s against the law” thanks to Obummer. He is the only one who had an issue with God. Get the book Paradigm by the Rabbi Jonathon Cahn and read that. It’s very interesting. It explains why alot of things that are going on today.

      • Feed Me More

replace god with any combination of words, it doesnt matter. doesnt make it real. there is no god unless you believe in nonsense fairy tales. trumps now making huge cuts on education and science so that just creates even more low brain powered sheep walking around with no clue on how the world works, which makes it easier for religion and politicians to have their way with them.

      • 😟

Keep telling yourself there is no Good. I confess Jesus to everyone, which means I know I will be in heaven with him one day. Where are you going?

  • Feed Me More

forget the border, build walls around gun shows and gun stores. no reason anybody ever needs an ar-15 unless they are terrorists looking to kill people

    • The Real Scrantony

You should build a wall around your house, you can have your “safe space” and leave America alone for the rest of the patriots to enjoy the full freedoms defined by ALL of the amendments in the bill of rights

    • Yeah, that’ll work...

Right on! That will certainly keep the other several hundred thousand guns already out there out of the wrong hands… Idiot.

  • Why

These school shootings and public shootings have gotten way out of control . this is not what some people would consider is cool. There is no rime or reason to continue doing this. This doesn’t make you famous . this is not a way to make yourself famous . this needs to stop in public schools a public places . this is pure heartbreaking to many family’s. The publicity on these mass shootings should be kept at a minimal . strange people seem to be using this is a moment to shine and gaiter info. When this should be a moment of your death sentence if your still alive. This is so sad and heart wrenching this is distubring . they may have a gun but still this makes them cowards

“had once been expelled from the school for disciplinary reasons” Students get detention for “disciplinary reasons”, they get suspended for really bad “disciplinary reasons”. To get expelled you have to be a psycho on jihad.
“Disturbing’ digital profile” sounds like CNN code for Antifa, ISIS and Democrat supporter who quotes the koran allot.

    • wake up

Grow up. Your uniformed CNN “outrage” is getting so old. Go put on your tin hat and slow-dance with Alex Jones…

    • Givemeabreak

The right has become the group that complains all the time that it’s everybody else’s fault. They never assume any responsibility for their spread of hate or poor legislation. Like somehow the right hasn’t had a hand in coruption or having their own best interests at heart while they screw over the American people.

Another zombie devoid of any free thought stuck in the bubble just parroting what he heard on Fox or Infowars. One nation controlled by the media. Welcome to idiot America.

Keep watching that TV programming it’s working.

  • Very, very disturbing

The same could be said about A LOT of social media profiles. But, being the easily offended anti-establishment sovereign state society that we are, heaven forbid that anyone be profiled by a few photos and statements on the inter webs…
