AVOCA -- The travel rush is on again as folks try to head home after the holiday. That means crowds at the airport and on the road.
Let’s be honest, when you're traveling the day after Christmas, it can be tough to keep your inner Grinch locked inside. Newswatch 16 spoke to some travelers who had tips about how to stay smiling during one of the busiest travel days of the year.
It’s the morning after Christmas and all through the Wilkes-Barre Scranton International Airport, everybody was in a hurry, but they knew how to get some much needed emotional support.
“Pack some snacks, go to the bathroom before you get on the airplane, and travel early in the morning when there's not too much crowds,” Jennifer Betts of Plains said.
Early morning travelers clung to their tickets with care, with hopes that sleep soon would be there.
“I think I know that there's a nap coming later today. So far it's been pretty easy, usually we're like rushing around at the last minute but so far it's been good,” Beth Rickenbach of Boston said.
Holiday travel is actually expected to break records this season. According to AAA, 97 million Americans are expected to hit the roads this holiday season.
“I have to kind of maneuver my schedule around it, i.e. leave early just so I don't get stuck with everybody else driving through the day and stuff,” Nick Uva of Charlotte, North Carolina said.
Travelers at a rest stop in Ashley were nestled, all snug in their car, with memories of a happy holiday not too far.
“We went up to see my wife's grandfather. He's 99. I think that helped us a lot with maintaining a positive attitude while traveling,” Joel McAlduff of Columbia, Maryland said.
When out on the roads there was quite the clatter, but one driver we spoke to said the traffic wasn’t too bad to matter.
“Everything has been going good,” Eileen Jayne of Meshoppen said.
There were a few unlucky travelers on Tuesday. We were told a handful of people actually missed their flights because they got to the airport too late. Airport officials remind everyone to get there an hour and a half ahead of time to make sure you get on your flight.
