LEWISBURG -- Saturday's violence in Virginia sparked an outcry from people in Union County who say enough is enough. They held a rally in downtown Lewisburg Sunday.

Organizers held the peace rally to stand in solidarity with the counter-protestors in Virginia.

Those who came out in Lewisburg also wanted to honor the woman who died and others who were injured in the violence.

More than 100 people stood firm in front of the steps of the post office in Lewisburg.

The peace rally on Market Street was in direct response to the violence this weekend in Virginia, sparked by a white supremacist rally.

Steva Stowell-Hardcastle organized the event after watching hatred spark a deadly attack on counter-protesters.

"I was scared. I started to tear up. This was so sad. This is not right," Stowell-Hardcastle said.

People came armed--not with weapons, but with words. Signs that read "Black Lives Matter" and "No Hate."

Dwayne Heisler of Catawissa held a sign honoring the victim killed during the protests in Virginia. Her last Facebook post read: "If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention."

"I don't know what it is going to take for people to realize what hate is, what hate is in this country and what being an American is because this woman lost her life doing this," Heisler said.

This rally in Lewisburg was peaceful from beginning to end--unlike the horrific scene that played out in another college town on Saturday, a dark day for the country prompting others to shine a light together in hopes of overcoming hate.

"I felt like it was important to be part of this and to be out here with people with a lot of people, a lot of great people who say no to hate, just no that this is not something we are going to let overtake our country," said Raymond Cummings of Lewisburg.

Two more rallies for peace were held Sunday evening in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre.

There would be a lot more than 100 people there, if this group weren’t so hateful and exclusionary themselves. It’s always the same 100, congratulating themselves for being the ‘good whites’ and holding rallies. When I challenged some viewpoints of some leaders in these rallies there in Lburg, while trying to work with them on an anti-racist project– I was retaliated against very aggressively. ‘Peace’ and ‘love’ rallies are not very effective, and there is resistance from Lburg progressives to take effective actions to address racism, and our culture of intolerance.

Kat, I would love to read some more details of your encounters. I’m not suggesting that names be typed, but I get the idea that a lot of this protesting is bullsh*t right out of the gate, regardless of who’s protesting. A really insightful comment, Kat.

  • Jesus is my snowflake

Thanks to my neighbors who took the time, effort and sadly these days had the courage, to stand up and ask people to do nothing more than be decent to one another.

  • ...

I like how they act like blm and antifa weren’t attacking people themselves, and not out of self defense.

    • Lloyd Schmucatelli

They don’t think for themselves. They’re mindless drones. Useful idiots.

Regurgitating watered down trickle down drivel from burnt out and brain dead California college professors.

Don’t take it too seriously. It becomes amusing after a while.

Get out of the road and you won’t get hit by a car, regardless of who it’s driven by!!! Hahaha. Madman or not. Blocking traffic is no peaceful protest.

  • Lloyd Schmucatelli

If I had to hang out with that group ofprotestors, I probably would have jumped in front of a car….

wouldn’t it be something if all these people, rallying together to abolish hate, like that’s every going to happen, would put 1/2 of that energy to rally against child/sexual abuse and domestic violence.

    • Rick

Or better yet abortion which is nothing more than murder of a defenseless child in the name of women’s rights. These left wingers denounce hate as long as it fits their agenda. Just watch and see how many “thumbs down” responses I get because I love and defend children! “All lives Matter, even children”

    • JessicaInWilliamsport

Wouldn’t it be something if those alt right/neo Nazi’s would protest child abuse (I notice you didn’t include them in your criticism)…. Seriously, the fact that people think protestors/activists are only interested in one cause is evidence that the commenter has issues with multitasking mentally. Protesting one thing, is not condoning another…. it’s just keeping on message for that particular protest.

      • JessicaInWilliamsport

I’ve engaged in protest quite a bit in my 47 years on this earth, not once have I ever been paid. Those types of lies are the epitomy of FAKE NEWS.

This is what happened in Charlottesville, since media is incapable of reporting:
-The Alt Right organized a peaceful assembly in Charlottesville called Unite the Right
-The organizers lawfully obtained a permit to host this event
-Wes Bellamy, the Vice-Mayor of Charlottesville, illegally revoked the permit for this event. Wes Bellamy is a known Leftist and is affiliated with the Black Panther Party, a Black supremacist organization
-The ACLU successfully sued Charlottesville for violating the First Amendment, and a Federal judge ruled that the permit must be reinstated and the right to assemble honored
-Unite the Right was scheduled to take place at 12:00pm today. At 11:30am, a heavily militarized police force illegally shut down the event, physically assaulting peaceful protesters with batons and tear gas. Several people were illegally arrested
-While evacuating, many protesters were illegally assaulted by counter-protesters from Antifa and Black Lives Matter as the police stood by and did nothing. Antifa and BLM members were recorded throwing bricks at people, using pepper spray, and throwing molotov cocktails and tear gas
-A terrorist drove his car straight in to a crowd of people, killing at least one. The state of Virginia declared a state of emergency with the National Guard on standby, and Charlottesville became the #1 news story in the world
-The lying media intentionally portrayed this all in a way to make it look like the peaceful protesters were the perpetrators of the violence, rather than the victims, despite heavy video evidence to the contrary
-This was an enormous breech of everyone’s First Amendment rights, and a violent police-state suppression of free speech that is now being hidden by the lying media. A LOT of lawsuits are incoming.. And once again the left was too quick to blame Trump , the NRA,Christians and Republicans..

    • Bill K.

Right on McAlluster, Shame your comment will be marked “awaiting moderation” (aka “deleted”) by morning. It’s perfectly fine to protest against any perceived injustice by white people. But if you protest against injustice instigated by black people well then “das raciz” and you face the wrath of the government. If anyone who is truly appalled by violence would research the FBI violent crime statistics they’d be shocked to see who really commits the vast majority of violent crime in the US. Hint…..they have a “lives matter” group named after them.

    • Rick

It’s obvious by the number of “thumbs down” responses you’re receiving McCalluster that people only want to hear left wing, fake news reports rather than the facts! Why don’t these people that are armed with signs that read “Black Lives Matter” and “No Hate” get all teary eyed and have rally’s over the daily black on black murders in Chicago? Don’t those lives matter too, or doesn’t it fit your political agenda?

    • Feed Me More

i think you listen to way to much alex jones, conspiracy nuts. left, right, up, down, conservative, liberal, whatever you call yourself, you should know that saluting the nazi flag with a tiki torch in your other hand is not right, freedom of speech or not, its ridiculous that were even having the conversation about if neo nazi white power scumbags are in the right or not, which they are not, especially when they run down innocent people and then speed off like the cowards they are

  • Mcalluster Lee

I just watched this video of the story….Right away we see BLM posters and rainbow about an All lives matter poster people…….I don’t condone violence when a group of people are using their 1st amendment right….these alt right groups have the right to protest anywhere…now it the alt left and the loony left would have stayed away their would not have been any violence , they the alt right would have protested and harm no foul….But NO you alt left couldn’t do that you had to go and get in their faces, and I’, sure you alt left wingers started throwing things and pushing, until the alt right groups had enough….
Now this loon who drove is car into the crowd well we don’t know if he’s part of the alt right or not, the rest of the story will come out about him in a few days.

    • Feed Me More

it already came out yesterday, he is a nazi loving freak, and nazis love republicans, and trump loved the neo nazi white power groups while he ran for president, inciting violence at his rallys to beat up and kick out anyone not white, so its safe to say that trump and the republican party are nazis

  • Lloyd Schmucatelli

Wow, there’s actually a comment section for this story?!?! I’m actually speechless!

Too bad these “for love” protestors don’t practice what they preach.

    Guess I’m not that speechless…

  • don't be fooled

Disarm hate. Catchy phrase. I’m all for living in a hate-free society. How about a society where I can explore the streets of any city at any hour? The group (who has supplied the poster you see in the photo) is a nefarious anti-gun group that would rather see people ‘disarmed’ and unable to defend themselves. Don’t be fooled – these lunatics hate the Second Amendment and your right to protect yourself.

    • El Ma

Don’t Be Fooled, they’re all PAID urban terrorists. And, nobody on either extreme end of the spectrum can seem to shut up long enough, sit and contemplate, and realize that this is all being orchestrated.

Good gawd, I need an ibuprophen………………
