SHAMOKIN -- A 10-year-old boy had to be taken to a hospital after he was run over by a float during a parade in Northumberland County.

According to a Shamokin police officer, the boy was part of the annual Anthracite Heritage Festival of the Arts Parade in Shamokin Friday evening.

Police say that around 6:15 p.m., the boy was on Independence Street, walking alongside a float that carried his teammates from the Mother Cabrini Youth baseball team. Somehow, the boy got caught under the front tire.

He was treated by EMTs and taken to Geisinger Medical Center near Danville. Police say he was conscious when he was put into the ambulance.

The parade stopped for about 15 minutes while emergency crews took care of the boy.

The parade was the scheduled kick-off for the Anthracite Heritage Festival of the Arts, which runs Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. along Market Street in Shamokin.
