ASHLEY -- A double block home was destroyed after a devastating fire tore through it early Sunday morning.

Six different fire departments in Luzerne County were called to the home along South Main Street in Ashley borough around 1 a.m. Sunday.

By daylight, there wasn't a whole lot left to see as cars drove by slowly, soaking in the sights of what's gone.

All six people who lived inside made it out safely, along with three dogs and two cats. One of the cats was missing, until it was seeing running from the wreckage while crews demolished the house later on in the day.

Greg Zawatski lived at this home for 22 years and is unsure what will happen next for him. But, Zawatski admits at least he and his family were able to collect some mementos from the house.

"It was a pleasant surprise that we were able to get some of the stuff that was irreplaceable out," said the homeowner.

As both of the families who lived here continue to pick up the pieces and try to salvage what they can, members of the community are already starting to pitch in.

"It was heartbreaking," said Aleisha Potechko, a friend of one of the families. She's already started collecting donations. "Hopefully they just keep coming in and they get whatever they need to get by for the time being."

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help both families get back on their feet.

Investigators tell Newswatch 16 that the cause of the fire couldn't be determined because of the extent of the damage.
