WILKES-BARRE -- With the throwing of some dirt, officials broke ground on what will be a new, 17,000-square-foot building. When finished, it will be the new home of an out-patient clinic at the Children's Service Center campus on South Franklin Street in Wilkes-Barre.

"It's going to be transformative for the future because it's going to greatly expand the number of children we take care of," said George Conyngham, a CSC board member.

Right now, the CSC helps about 6,000 kids every year, with mental, physical, and behavioral health services. With the new building, they expect that number to grow to more than 10,000, and the building to provide even more services.

"They're going to be able to get their primary care here, pharmacy needs met, as well their mental health needs met all at one site," said CSC Director Mike Hopkins.

Telysa Anderson comes to the CSC with her 9-year-old for therapy. She thinks it's great even more kids will get the treatment they need when the new building opens in a few years.

"And if you don't have to run all over looking at different CVS or whatever your place is that you need your medication, you can just get them here, that'd be even better, too!" she added.

The $6 million facility was funded mostly by donations. About $300,000 came from state dollars. But state officials say, when it's built, it will be a worthy investment.
