Wintry Mix in Wyoming County

TUNKHANNOCK -- The plow and salt trucks were out early and often on East Tioga Street in Tunkhannock. The road was just wet long before the sun came up Monday morning.

Dawn Ball was out too, snow shovel in hand.

"It's wet, sloppy snow," Ball said. "It's heavy to shovel but other than that, it's fine."

Ball said weekday snow presents a challenge. She has to get the sidewalks clear before downtown businesses welcome their first customers.

Matt Van Artsdalen was behind the wheel of his plow truck and behind the handle of a shovel taking care of a bank parking lot and its sidewalks. The winter is off to a snowy start, and Matt hopes he makes more money than he did during the warm and snow-less winter of 2015 -2016.

"It would be better if there was more," he said.

Only two inches of snow fell in downtown Tunkhannock, but on top of that, it was a little sleet, freezing rain, and rain.

For the most part, people in this part of Wyoming County woke up to some pretty decent roads Monday morning, but it was a much different story when the storm first hit the area.

James Vilchock is the guy with the stuck lug nuts and a flat tire. His SUV was damaged in an icy crash Sunday afternoon on Route 92 at Nicholson.

"I went through some bushes, lost a light, lost my mirror, then saw the pole head on. I turned the wheel fast and the back end hit the pole," Vilchock recalled.

Vilchock is OK. His truck isn't.

And then, there is 85-year-old Ned Learned of Tunkhannock. A little snow didn't stop his daily trip to Walmart in Eaton Township, just outside of Tunkhannock.

"I have four-wheel drive. I'm still able to shovel if I have to so, it's not much of a concern," said Learned.

And his outdoor activities don't end there. After Walmart, it's a walk with his Alaskan Malamute, named Bandit.
