HAWLEY -- Though the streets of downtown Hawley were pretty quiet, you could still feel a certain buzz in the air.

Winterfest is expected to fill the downtown streets with crowds all weekend.

"The whole town of Hawley gets itself into Christmas having all types of activities and it's a Victorian theme each year," Deborah Corcoran, director of Hawley Public Library.

The library is just one of the places to enjoy Winterfest. It will have crafts for kids, music, homemade soup, and an ice sculptor outside.

Winterfest gives a chance for the whole family to have fun and also gives places like the library a chance to raise money.

"Our funding keeps getting cut by the state and we have to scramble sometimes to make up the money we have lost. Unfortunately, we have had to close our doors just a few hours a week now," said Deborah Corcoran, director of Hawley Public Library.

Jim Rizzuto owns the Hawley Depot. In its first year, the store has yet to experience Winterfest.

Rizzuto is hoping big crowds check out his extensive collection of antique trains and other memorabilia.

"Right now, we are hoping to get a busy weekend. It's been a little slow since Labor Day but we are looking forward to a big Christmas rush and have a great winter season," said Rizzuto.

The First Presbyterian Church is no stranger to Winterfest.

Beth Crowley and Florence Tess have been baking cookies for events for the last ten years.

What started with 3,000 cookies is now 8,000 cookies -- gluten and non-gluten -- all for sale and all for the good of the community.

"It goes to support Head Start and also victims and prevention program. So it goes to the church and also the community," Beth Crowley.

The fun continues through Friday and doesn't end until Sunday.
