Last-Minute Shoppers Crowd Grocery Stores

KELLY TOWNSHIP -- Weis Markets near Lewisburg was more crowded than usual, as people rushed around getting their last-minute fixings for Thanksgiving.

"I'm having Thanksgiving tomorrow at my son and future daughter-in-law's house and this is our first Thanksgiving together, so picking up some great things for them," Peggy Diehl said.

It's the last big rush before Thanksgiving, and Weis Markets spokesperson Dennis Curtin says this holiday is the biggest food day of the year.

"We're not selling as many frozen turkeys as we used to, but we're selling way more fresh turkeys. And the fresh turkeys don't arrive until the Saturday or Sunday before Thanksgiving," Curtin said.

Sara Kelley and her daughter Katie looked over their shopping list and picked up some sweet potatoes.

"I've been away for a couple of weeks so I haven't had time to think about it before today. We're having five people for dinner, so it's not a big dinner, but enough that we want to have food for everybody," Kelley said.

To say Weis Markets was busy would be an understatement.

"It was hard to find a place to park," Diehl said.

"Busier than I usually see it when I come shopping. That's for sure," Kelley said.

"We've brought in extra staff in every department to keep the shelves stocked, to keep things fresh," Curtin said.

Curtin says it's also one of the busiest nights of the year for their pizza sales because people really don't feel like cooking the night before Thanksgiving.

"It makes perfect sense. Everybody's cooking for Thursday and they'd prefer not to cook on Wednesday night," Curtin said.

Weis Markets stores are open on Thanksgiving Day until 5 p.m.
