BENTON -- It's election day at Appleman Elementary in Benton. Sixth-graders from Columbia County organized their own polling place for the entire school, equipped with registration cards, and students dressed up as the presidential candidates and playing the role of election officials.

"They absolutely loved it," said teacher Shannon Yedloski. "It's been a great week. I think they've been more excited about the election than they were about Halloween."

Students like Alyssa Cumberland have been watching the real election closely and can not believe there are people out there who won't vote.

"It's really important because if people don't vote, then they're going to bicker with whoever gets president so your vote counts if you want to get your president elected," said Alyssa Cumberland.

"It's been even more interesting because there's so much hype with the candidates this year," said Cumberland. "The students were more into it before I even brought it up. Usually, I bring it up and teach about democracy and the Constitution but this year they were into it beforehand. They were excited about it before we got into it."

For those interested in the results, Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton 167 to 52 in this mock election.
