Pennsylvania American Water is taking steps to restart its water treatment plant in Milton after a gas leak during Friday’s flooding in central Pennsylvania.

The company shut down the plant Friday as a precaution in case water in the Susquehanna River was polluted with gasoline from the leak near Loyalsock Creek.

Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection tested the water and found no evidence of contamination near the water plant’s intake.

“After consultation with DEP officials, we determined the plant can be restarted in light of today’s test results showing no trace from the gasoline spill in the river, ” said Pennsylvania American Water Vice-President of Operations Jimmy Sheridan. “Still, our water quality experts will continue to monitor the situation.”

On Sunday, the water company lifted its request for customers to conserve water use.

Pennsylvania American Water said customers might notice discolored or cloudy water in some areas. The water company stressed that discolored water is not a public health issue. Customers should run their faucets for a few minutes until the water is clear before using it.
