WILKES-BARRE -- Some American Red Cross volunteers who spent weeks helping people after devastating flooding down south are back home.

This week marks one month since deadly flooding hit Louisiana.

The volunteers from Luzerne County spent several weeks alongside hundreds of other volunteers from across the country. They served more than one million meals and snacks to flood victims.

Some of the volunteers gathered in Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday upon returning home.

“Entire neighborhoods were just destroyed. I heard stories from people saying they had no idea the flood was coming. They got out of bed to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night and they stepped into knee-deep water in their house. They couldn’t save cars. They couldn’t save anything,” said John Byrd of Pittston.

All the volunteers say the acts of kindness and generosity they saw amidst the flooding in Louisiana is something they will never forget.
