ASHLAND -- Inside Mrs. Smith's third grade classroom at North Schuylkill Elementary School, books were closed and hands were raised. About 18 students' eyes were wide as the moon as they learned about space.

"I learned cool stuff about space and how different stuff works on the moon and how astronauts work on the moon. It was pretty fun," said Hayden Felty.

For certified teachers, NASA has moon rocks and other material from space to show students.

Jennifer Rex, a seventh grade math teacher, taught students about the laws of gravity. She showed the students moon rocks collected during the Apollo space missions of 1969 and 1972.

Rex believes it's important to build students' interest in subjects like math and science early.

"Especially in higher levels. Once they hear math and science a lot of them shut down because they just don't like it anymore. It's just too difficult for them, but when they see these moon rocks, it's just a great opportunity for them to learn and see something interesting," said Rex.

"It was fun. It was learning about stuff to make us get good grades," said Jordanna Frie, a third grader.

It's an important lesson for all of us to keep reaching for the stars.
