JIM THORPE -- Labor Day Weekend is known as the unofficial end of summer, and this year many are spending it in Carbon County.
Beaches along the East Coast are dealing with strong winds and rip currents from what once was Tropical Storm Hermine.
David Grayson of New Jersey said the dangerous conditions and potential flooding are why he canceled his family's beach trip.
"We had planned to take a big family vacation in Delaware, and Hermine turned to be mean. We decided rather than risking life and health, to come up to the Poconos and we're spending the day here," Grayson said.
The sidewalks in Jim Thorpe were filled with shoppers on Labor Day. The Passmore family of Virginia missed the storm before heading to the northeast.
"When we left home it had the potential to effect us rather significantly. It stayed farther to the east and the shore took a beating," Marsh Passmore of Virginia said.
At the House of Jerky, business has been steady all weekend. Many of the shoppers are people who canceled a trip to the shore.
"I actually think a lot of people came to the smaller towns inward from the beach. We had a lot that did say they were scheduled for the shore but they came up here instead of the shore," Bernadette McGinley said.
Across the street at The Gem Shop employees welcome the extra business.
"We've had a lot of people from different areas, areas that we don't normally see. They have been coming in steadily this morning," Kathy Kenderish said.
Despite having to cancel plans at the shore, visitors say coming to Jim Thorpe for Labor Day was well worth it.
"You know, when they say you got lemons, make lemonade and this is sure a nice lemonade for us because it's beautiful up here," Grayson said.
