BLOOMING GROVE TOWNSHIP -- Nearly two years ago, crime tape fluttered in front of the Pennsylvania State Police barracks at Blooming Grove in Pike County.

Troopers were on edge.

Two of their own were shot in an ambush style attack on September 12, 2014. Trooper Alex Douglass was badly injured and Corporal Bryon Dickson was killed.

Now, work is underway for a memorial garden in honor of Corporal Dickson in front of the Blooming Grove barracks.

"It's a sad thing that happened, but it's an honor to do something for the community and to have a monument here for the state police officer,” said Timothy Gibbs of Brick House Garden Center, who is working on the memorial garden.

"It's pretty cool. It's nice to be part of it,” Tim Huber of Lackawaxen said.

The $10,000 project is sponsored by the Penn State Master Gardeners of Pike County.

Plans for the garden include a memorial stone, two benches, plants, and shrubs.

"I'm all for it. I wish they would do it more often at all the barracks, Swiftwater, everywhere, all of them,” said Rich Bruno of Barrett Township.

The hope is to have this memorial garden complete in time for a dedication on September 12, the second anniversary of Corporal Dickson's death.

"The Pennsylvania state troopers are here to protect us and they do the job very well, and they put their lives on the line for us every single day and night,” said Bruno.

“Everyone appreciates the garden,” Lt. Sean Jennings, commander of Blooming Grove state police said.
