PENN FOREST TOWNSHIP -- A park in Penn Forest Township near Jim Thorpe will be become a playing field for all kinds of athletes.

The $2 million project is already attracting visitors like Kelly Zongaro from Blakeslee.

"I like it and the kids like it a lot," said Zongaro.

The 30-acre tract of land will become a place the whole family can enjoy.

Phase one was complete last year equipped with a playground, walking trail and soccer field.

Phase two consists of much more, including two baseball fields, a football field, tennis courts, and more.

"I think it's very important. Kids need to be outside and they need to be able to communicate with other people, play right with other children," said Zongaro.

Whether you like soccer, baseball, or softball, there is a little bit here for everyone to enjoy. Some who have already been using the park tell us they can't wait to see the finished product.

It's not just families waiting for the park to be finished, businesses are also anticipating the opening too.

The owners at Scoops, a new ice cream shop next to the field, expect to be busy serving guests some sweet treats after they spend some time on the playing fields.

"We are going to be flooded and I think the hard part is going to be keeping track of the schedule and knowing when the teams are all going to show up. I am expecting them to come in at 15 or 20 people at a time," said Ken Boltman, Scoops owner.

Work on the fields is expected to be complete by next month.

Next year, a pavilion and a concession stand will also be built.

All parts of the new park are expected to be ready for visitors to enjoy by next spring.
