LACKAWANNA COUNTY -- For the first time in the history of the St. Joseph’s Festival in Lackawanna County, the event has been canceled.
Heavy downpours hit the area on Saturday and organizers were forced to cancel the festival for the day.
The annual festival coincides with the telethon that raises money for St. Joseph’s Center in Scranton. The center helps children and adults who have physical and intellectual disabilities.
Organizers said the telethon scheduled for 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday will still go on despite the rain.
Officials with St. Joseph’s Center said they hope more people will donate to the center after the weather kept people away from the festival.
“We rely tremendously on this festival to help us with our budget,” said Sister Maryalice Jacquinot, IHM, president and CEO of St. Joseph's Center.
The festival is still scheduled to continue on Sunday from noon to 8 p.m., if the weather cooperates.
