TOWANDA -- Volunteers are scattered throughout downtown Towanda as part of the new "Adopt-a-Hydrant" program.

The borough in Bradford County provides paint and other equipment to volunteers willing to clean up and pain the aging fire hydrants.

The Main Street hydrants feature the school district's colors, while the rest are being painted the traditional red.

"It's something I can feel proud of," said 16-year-old David Boardman. "I did this. I left my mark on the town and it'll be here for 20 or 30 years down the road."

"They were in such bad shape," said Vicki Wells of the Towanda Borough Recreation Committee. "The paint was peeling and they were down to primer. They looked awful."

Organizers hope 60 hydrants in the borough will be painted by the end of next summer.
