With temperatures expected to reach the upper eighties again today, area veterinarians are on a mission to remind pet owners to keep their cats cool and their dogs not so hot. Newswatch 16's Ryan Leckey tackled this topic today with Dr. Jeremy Wentz of Barton Heights Veterinary Hospital from Stroudsburg.
Dr. Wentz has the following tips, especially for dog owners:
- Exercise your pet in the morning and evenings to avoid the blazing hot sun.
- Keep your dogs hydrated. A 60 pound dog should have a half-gallon of water a day and even more in this hot weather.
- When traveling with your dog, just like a kid, keep the air conditioning on and don't leave your dog in a hot car for any length of time.
- Signs of heat stroke in a dog include panting a lot, vomiting, and possibly seizures. If your dog exhibits any of these symptoms, contact your vet immediately.

Millan says his team limits how long dogs spend outdoors during this type of weather and make it a point to have them play inside more often in their air-conditioned facility.
