WILKES-BARRE -- The Kistler Pool in Wilkes-Barre finally opened on Monday, now one full week into summer.

“Finally, good! Get these kids out in the community and get them to play with other kids,” said Jennifer Stoudt of Wilkes-Barre

City leaders had doubts the Kistler Pool would open this year because of a lack of lifeguards.

“I'm not exactly sure to why the case was. I think every pool sometimes has trouble finding lifeguards, but it came through in the end,” said pool manager Jack Porter.

It came through in the end after the Wilkes-Barre YMCA offered a $100 discount for its $225 lifeguard certification class, as long as those trainees committed to working at the Kistler Pool.

Emily Mangold was among six people who took advantage of the offer.

“They said the pool couldn't be opened without lifeguards, so it was definitely, of course, I'll do it,” she said.

Now she's earning more money than she did when she worked as an attendant at the pool. The Kistler Pool is open daily from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. through August 20.
