DIMOCK TOWNSHIP -- It has been one busy year for students at a career and technology center in Susquehanna County. From benches to cars to homes, the students are learning some important lessons.
Just a few benches are left to ship over to the courthouse in Susquehanna County. The benches are a donation from the Susquehanna County Career and Technology Center near Springville.
It's one of several student projects taking the skills they're learning and applying them to the real thing.
"It's a privilege to work on something the community's going to use," said senior Noah Cobb.
Over in the automotive class, a bright red Dodge Neon is ready for its new owner after all the repair work was done by students.
The center chose to donate the car to a Spanish teacher at neighboring Elk Lake High School. She lost her home to fire earlier this year.
Kristine Smith said the car will help her family. They only had one vehicle which is often used to take her daughter, who has a disability, to appointments in Hershey.
"If my husband had the car, I would stay here and wait for him and my other children until 7 or 8 or sometimes 10:00 at night to get home later on. Having two cars will make our lives much easier," she said.
A short drive from the school, a new home is taking shape. It's another project that gives students experience installing plumbing, electric and so much more.
"It gets you ready for the workforce, and helps you understand how to do everything pretty much," said freshman Clara Unger.
When the home goes on the market next year, the money from the sale will help students build another home.
