MONTANDON – The kindergarten classes at Montandon Elementary School near Milton listened to a story about Curious George Tuesday. After a few minutes, that story came to life.
The popular monkey paid the children a visit.
But Curious George wasn't just at the school to socialize, he was there to hand out books. It's all part of PPL's new "Cover to Cover" program. In cooperation with WVIA, PPL gave students across the state more than 20,000 books.
The gift was done so kids can keep up with their reading skills throughout the summer.
"We want to make sure that when they come back to school in the fall, they have the best opportunity to be engaged in learning," said Teri Macbride with PPL.
Each child got a coloring book to take home. The kids couldn't take their eyes off the books.
"Because I like coloring and I'm running out of coloring books," said Anneke Rode of Montandon.
PPL also collected books for first, second, and third grade students in Montandon. They were allowed to take four books each.
"To get a book like this in their hands is a special treat, especially going into the summer," said kindergarten teacher Jacqueline Martin.
And for the children who are just learning how to read, like six-year-old Caleb Butler, PPL's generosity opened up a whole new chapter in his summer vacation.
Caleb says his favorite part about reading is all the funny parts in the stories.
Over the next few weeks, PPL and WVIA will do similar presentations at other schools around our area.
