LUZERNE COUNTY -- Newswatch 16 is trying to get to the bottom of why Interstate 81 near the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport has been torn up all week.
Contractors started tearing up the highway in Luzerne County Monday night and continued milling through Thursday.
The stretch of roadway is expected to stay this way heading into next week. According to PennDOT, it is more cost effective to finish all the milling first, before the paving begins. The paving phase of the project is supposed to begin early next week.
PennDOT officials say a sign is posted warning drivers of uneven pavement in the area. The speed limit along the stretch of the interstate is also reduced to 45 miles per hour while construction is underway.
