EAST BUFFALO TOWNSHIP -- Watching 2-year-old Kyler Gottschall, you'd never know.

"He was very quiet and very shy,” said Yvonne Swales.

Ask Yvonne Swales, Kyler's babysitter, and she'll tell you a lot has changed for the 2 year old since he first started coming to events at the Public Library for Union County.

"He's talking more and he's sharing more having a good time," said Swales. “He really enjoys it. It’s really helped him a lot.”

As kids are breaking out of their shells, there is also something else just about ready to hatch: 16 chicken eggs.

It took a little help from mom or a step stool to see inside the incubator that's been set up at Ms. Mary Harrison’s desk. The “hatching project” is part of a science-based program for preschoolers.

"This is what they need to do to make sure it's hands on that they can see what's going on," said Mary Harrison.

"No, you don't really see that in a library that often that's really neat. That really is," said Sheldon Sumner.

Sheldon Sumner stops by the library with his grandson Weston every week.

"Three or four weeks ago, he wouldn't have said any number at all so he's just working on numbers lately,” said Sumner.

"They come to the library to find it's more than just checking books in and checking books out,” said Harrison.

Once the eggs hatch, they'll stay at the library until they find a new home with Ms. Mary on her farm in Union County.
