COVINGTON TOWNSHIP -- Now that the weather is getting nicer, we will be spending more time outdoors.

Lackawanna College wants children to appreciate nature with a program that kicked off Thursday. It's an effort to connect youngsters with Mother Nature.

The Natural Wonders program at Lackawanna College Environmental Education Center is for kids 3 to 6 years old.

The boys and girls were looking for eggs, while learning that a lot more than just chickens lay them.

"My 3 year old was picking up a rock, checking for eggs, so it went through," said Jennifer Cresko of Duryea.

Before the kids went outside, there was a timely lesson about eggs, just before Easter, that they come in all shapes and sizes from all kinds of creatures.

Then they got to see what's inside those eggs, blowing out the yolks to create a little memento from their adventure. The activity carried an educational Easter theme and some decorating fun. It's all a very early start to learning about the environment.

"That's why we want, to get them out at a young age so they can grow up and be stewards of our land."

"They did some classroom activity, a little craft, and then the progression outside to use what they learned in the classroom and use it out in the world. It was a nice program, really well run," said Cresko.

As they explored the outdoors, they seemed to remember what they learned.

"Oh, this is great. My kids love it. They are very outdoorsy," said Liz Tierney of Covington Township.

This is just the first of the Early Explorers program, which is scheduled to run every other Thursday for the next few months. As spring blooms, these kids will be out to learn what nature has to offer.
