DUPONT -- A special group of Navy veterans gathered in Luzerne County to mark a big milestone of their unique role in the US military.

The U.S. Navy Seabee Veterans of America celebrated their 75th birthday at the Dupont VFW Saturday night.

Seabees are naval specialists who helped construct everything from airfields to hospitals and barracks, dating all the way back to World War II.

One Seabee from World War II was even on-hand at the Dupont VFW. It was an honor for the many Seabees spanning several wars.

"For me, it's an honor to have served with so many distinct gentlemen," said one Seabee, Robert Maslyar.

At its peak, more than 300,000 men served as Seabees during World War II.
