HAZLETON -- Some firefighters in Luzerne County were busy Saturday, but they weren't fighting fires. They were working to prevent them.

The Hazleton Fire Department and American Red Cross teamed up to install 270 smoke detectors in 60 homes and businesses throughout the city.

It's all part of the Red Cross's nationwide Home Fire Program.

The campaign also aims to teach fire safety strategies so people know how to get out of a home or building if there is a fire.

"My husband kept saying he didn't know where to put them because of the size of our rooms, so now they're all installed where they should be," said Linda Ulichny of Hazleton.

"A lot of the houses we visited had no smoke alarms at all or had ones that were not working. Two minutes can make the difference of life or death. Early detection or early warning, that two minutes can make a big difference," said Sean Jones with the Hazleton Fire Department.

The goal of the Home Fire Campaign is to reduce fire-related deaths and injuries by 25 percent over the next five years.
