Officials with the Internal Revenue Service have revealed a hack of its computers was far worse than first thought.
For the second time, the IRS has revised the estimated damage of a criminal syndicate’s massive theft of American taxpayer data.
On Friday, the tax-collection agency revealed that number is now closer to 720,000.
The latest number is the result of a nine-month investigation by the U.S. Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.
The stolen information includes social security numbers and birth dates, which could be used to impersonate taxpayers, file false returns, and collect refunds.
Officials say they will contact people they believe could be susceptible to identity theft.
