MIDDLEBURG -- Some people who live in Middleburg think of Middleswarth potato chips as another food group.
"It don't take long for a bag to be gone at our house," Dodie Blackwell said.
Recently the entire country got a glimpse of what many people in our area consider their favorite chip. A bag of Middleswarth chips appeared on an episode of the ABC hit show "Modern Family" on the kitchen counter.
But how did these chips go from the production line in Middleburg, to Hollywood?
Middleswarth was contacted about a year ago by Legacy Entertainment, a product placement company. The latest movie in the "Rocky" series, "Creed," was filming in Philadelphia.
"There was a producer or an assistant on the set of that movie that wanted Middleswarth potato chips to be part of it," Bret Middleswarth said.
The scene was cut from the movie, but the chips were sent to other movie and TV production sets.
About three weeks ago, Middleswarth found out their chips would be on WNEP and ABC's "Modern Family." The episode aired on February 10 and people in Middleburg are still buzzing about it.
"It's a great publicity thing. It's PR for our area. It just gets the product out there," Coleen Renshaw said.
"95 percent of our sales are here in the state of Pennsylvania only, and to be all the way out there in California, some people couldn't believe. They had to look twice to see if it really was our chips," Middleswarth said.
And that may not even have been the last you've seen of Middleswarth chips in the national spotlight. The company sent out even more bags to Hollywood so you may see them in even more TV shows.
Middleswarth says sometimes production companies pay Legacy Entertainment for use of lesser-known products to give them exposure, like Middleswarth chips.
