Some new research shows more and more of us may be at risk for hackers on our cellphones.   IDG Research conducted a survey and stressed that "roughly two thirds of organizations have a mobility program in which they give out a cell phone or have a corporate app.   And 74% of survey respondents say that their companies had experienced a data breach due to a mobile security issue, almost always extending from malicious apps or unsecured WiFi."

But it's not only businesses at risk, many of us may be open to hackers as well if you don't have the right security programs or options selected on your cellphone.   To help beef up our own cellphone security, Newswatch 16 turned to Joe Broghamer, an adjunct instructor at Misericordia University and former homeland security employee for some tips.

Keep your phone safe:

  • Only download signed Apps from a trusted source
  • Do not “Jail break” smart phone
  • Encrypt all personal data on smart phone
  • Never use untrusted WiFi networks
  • Use two-factor authentication (like a pin & fingerprint on your iPhone)

Never trust a Redirected Web site

Always enter the URL directly

  • Prevents site masquerading

Secure Delete (a program for PCs/Laptops)

  • Normal delete removes only pointers to a file these files can be recovered
  • Use commercial overwriting (“wipe”) software

Use Password Manager App

  • Can use complex passwords without having to remember each password.  Stores your passwords for everything from your email to social media sites.
