SOUTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP -- State police blame a wrong-way driver for a crash on Interstate 81 in Lackawanna County early Saturday morning that left four people dead.

The Lackawanna County coroner identified the victims as Vinodchandra Patel, 68, Komal Vyas, 30, Shilpa Patel, 29, and Ashley Wheeler, 32, all from Scranton.

The crash happened around 1 a.m. in the southbound lanes just past the Clarks Summit exit.

Troopers say it appears the driver of a 2016 Lincoln MKZ was headed north in the southbound lanes. The car crashed into a 2007 Honda Accord headed south.

According to the Lackawanna County coroner, Wheeler was a passenger in the Lincoln vehicle that was driving the wrong way. The coroner has no further information on the driver of the Lincoln vehicle.

The state police and Lackawanna County District Attorney's office are investigating the deadly crash.
