WILKES-BARRE -- The old Hotel Sterling site project at River and Market Streets is still in question. The city put it up for bid over the summer, but the sole bidder recently withdrew their application.

The 115-year-old Hotel Sterling was a building full of history, and a jewel of the Diamond City, until it  became rundown and was finally demolished almost three years ago.

Taxpayers like Michelle Behlar are disappointed to hear the only interested developer for the Sterling site pulled out.

“The city's a beautiful place but it needs development, nice development,” she said.

Businesses in Wilkes-Barre were also hopeful that the old Sterling site would be turned into a multi-use building.

The city's request for bids calls for the space to be a mixed-use building, that could include a hotel, as well as residential and office space.

The city says it's in talks with some other possible developers but is still seeking bids.
