SUMMIT HILL -- For many people, once New Year's Day is over, it's time to take down the Christmas tree. And in this week's power to save, we look at one option where you can recycle it.
The Carbon County Environmental Education Center in Summit Hill is now accepting Christmas trees. It already has a pile of some people have dropped off.
There are a couple uses for the trees here. One is to chip them up then use the mulch on trails. The other is to pile up the trees to create habitat for small animals which is something some of you can do at home too.
"If you have a large yard or you have a corner of your yard you are willing to give up, just drag your Christmas tree down to that corner and let it sit there. Animals will use it," said Franklin Clock of the Carbon County Environmental Education Center. "It will break down eventually on its own and it will be in small pieces. But mice, the birds, squirrels and chipmunks, they'll use that for cover during the winter as well."
If you want to drop your tree off at the Carbon County Environmental Education Center, they ask that you remove all lights, decorations and tinsel.
