FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP -- Two people died in a late night crash in Columbia County.

It happened around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday along Route 487 in Franklin Township, near Catawissa.

When first responders got to the scene of the wreck along Route 487, they say one car split in two and the other badly damaged.

Daren Kremser, 28, of Catawissa and Shane Breach, 46, of Bloomsburg were killed in the crash and two other men were hurt.

The Catawissa police department is investigating the crash due to a conflict of interest.

One of the victims is related to the police chief in Locust Township.

Chief Josh Laidacker says Kremser was driving the gray car southbound on Route 487. He tried to turn right and slid sideways into the white SUV, driven by Zachary Santor of Shamokin.

Kremser and Breach were killed instantly.

"We definitely believe that speed was involved. Due to the evidence at the scene and so forth, we had to factor that in," said Catawissa Police Chief Josh Laidacker.

Kremser's father, Dean, was in the front seat and is expected to make a full recovery, along with the driver of the SUV.

The chief gives a lot of credit to the first responders on scene because a lot of them knew the victims in this crash.

"It's a tragedy any time of year, but especially on the holidays. It's difficult because it is a time for families and our hearts definitely go out to the families of both victims in this case."

According to witnesses, it was raining and foggy. Police would not say whether alcohol played a role in the crash but Chief Laidacker reminds people to be safe while driving.

"This time of year is a little more difficult. As far as we're concerned, we have a lot of travel on the roadways and we just would caution folks to be extra careful when you're out there and be very vigilant."
