WEST PENN TOWNSHIP -- Sophia Waltman doesn't consider herself an artist, but the fifth grade student at West Penn Elementary School near Tamaqua says she likes to draw when the time is right.

Time was the inspiration behind her poster.

"I've seen what happens to you, what happens to your body and everything. It's not very good," said Waltman.

Sophia and the rest of the fifth grade class made posters to inspire people to be drug-free.

It's part of a contest through the state attorney general's office.

"It really opens up a way for us to have that communication. It's not just all about school. It's about what's going on outside of their school," said Michele Bittner, Waltman's fifth grade teacher.

Sophia's poster was one of the top two at the school. She didn't think it would go much further than that, but when it did, she was pretty surprised

She didn't think it would go much further than that, but when it did, she was pretty surprised.

"I doubt I'll win, I'm just going to have fun with it and then I won."

Sophia's poster will be in a calendar with a drug-free theme along with other young artists from around the state.

Bittner said, "She works very hard in school, she's a great student and I think this was a fantastic way to honor all of the things that she does."

Sophia is proud of her work too.

"I feel happy and it's like I accomplished something that's like really big."

You can find the fifth grader's work in the calendar next month, her artwork is the picture for the month of January.
