East Stroudsburg, PA -- A  Walmart in the Poconos is back open for business after an armed man was shot and killed by police.

Police have identified the man they shot and killed as Andrew Todd of Northampton County.

But there are still questions, how Todd ended up at the Walmart in East Stroudsburg and why he seemingly set out to face off with officers inside the store.

When Newswatch 16 arrived on scene Sunday morning, a dumpster full of yellow police tape could be seen being cleared away. Then, it was pretty much business as usual. It's less than two weeks before Christmas and it's been very busy all day.

However, it was a terrifying scene Saturday night as shoppers found themselves in the aisles face to face with the armed man.

State police say it was just after 10 p.m. Todd entered the Walmart armed with two hand guns and a machete.

"He was holding the gun to his head and he was walking straight down to the automotive," said Chris Torino of Stroudsburg. "Then he looked back and he had the gun to his head still, and then he turned and walked down one of the aisles."

Terrified customers tried to get to safety. Torino added, "We were trying to get out, the door was locked, you had to pry the door open, we came out here and just stood back."

Stroud Area Regional Police arrived and  confronted Todd. When he pointed a gun at the officers, they fired striking him in the chest. The 20-year-old was taken to the hospital but did not survive.

"It's scary, really scary," said Vanessa Canfield of East Stroudsburg.

One witness tells Newswatch 16 she saw Todd outside the store talking on a cell phone, and heard him say that he had two guns.

Officials are trying to determine why the man from Mt. Bethel was in East Stroudsburg, how he got here, and why he would have terrorized customers and end up forcing police to open fire.

A spokesperson for Walmart says Todd never worked at the store, and is not believed to have a connection to any employees. By mid morning, the store was back open and the parking lot quickly filled

Margie Conklin of East Stroudsburg said, "I am surprised, I mean like what were you thinking, Walmart, the middle of East Stroudsburg, there is police activity all over the place and just to come in, it is crazy."

A representative for Walmart says, while there is no one on site right now, counseling is available for any employees who need it.

People we spoke to say they are relieved no workers or customers were killed or injured.

"I was wondering if any of them were hurt. I work in the hospital anytime there is a shooting, my first thing is like oh who got hurt," said Aisha Boddie-Willis of East Stroudsburg.

An autopsy is planned for next week.

Walmart released a statement saying that:

"We are thankful there were no injuries to customers or our associates. We would like to thank the Stroud Area Regional Police for their quick response."
