COAL TOWNSHIP -- It's the time of year that people are sending out Christmas cards. We found one area girl who is helping out a diocese get in the spirit of the season

Who would have thought a drawing would get Abigail Doss, age 14, noticed by the bishop of the Diocese of Harrisburg?

Not Doss who participated in the bishop's first Christmas card designing contest.

"I used pastels. I used a lot of colors for the background and then I just used sharpies for the silhouettes of the three wise men on the camels and a palm tree in the back and the North Star," said Abigail, explaining her drawing.

Out of the 11,000 students in the Diocese of Harrisburg, the Christmas card designs were split up into four age groups.

"Abby was chosen for the one category. We picked out her design. We submitted it down to Harrisburg and hers was chosen," said art teacher Matt Leavens.

Doss, an eighth grader at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional in Coal Township, won her category and her drawing will appear on some of Bishop Ronald Gainer's Christmas cards.

"I think that's really cool because I've never had that done. I'm only known for swimming and sports and I think it's really cool. I've been doing art since I was really little," Abby added.

As part of her prize, Abby, her family, and her art teacher all get to have dinner with the bishop next week. They all say they're excited because they've never met him before.

"It's kind of cool that I get to meet him myself," she said.

"I guess this is now my opportunity, so I'm really excited about it," said Leavens.

The winning designs were chosen by diocesan employees.

"She stuck a lot of time and effort into it and she came out on top and I'm really proud of her," Leavens added.

The bishop said in a news release that it will be his great joy to use these cards to send out his Christmas greetings.
