MIFFLINBURG -- Veterans Day is a time to honor those who served our country. As part of Veterans Day, many restaurants are offering free meals to vets.

Steven Boob of Mifflinburg proudly served our country in the United States Air Force.

"I was a Vietnam vet. I served two tours in Vietnam," Boob said.

On this Veterans Day, Boob stopped by Sheetz to get a free sandwich and drink for lunch. Sheetz is one of many places offering free meals to vets.

"It's just something that the vets really appreciate. Every vet that I talked to this morning was going someplace for a free meal so they were out and going to enjoy the day," Boob said.

It's not just national chains that are offering free meals for veterans, some local restaurants are also doing it.

"My father was a veteran. My husband is a veteran and I feel strongly about it," Sue Iddings said.

Iddings owns Carriage Corner Restaurant on Chestnut Street in Mifflinburg. She's offered free meals to vets on Veterans Day for as long as she can remember.

"I think veterans give up a lot to be veterans, to be in the service, and we as individuals should respond and give something back to them," Iddings said.

William Barnett and his wife Mary Ellen enjoyed their free lunch. William served in the Navy in World War II.

"The invasion was Easter Sunday. There was a lot of action, a lot of deaths, a lot of ships being blown up," Barnett said.

The Carriage House Restaurant was packed with veterans enjoying their free lunches.

"It's really been unexpected. Quite a pleasant surprise for me and actually quite touching," Bruce Phelps said.

The veterans just show their military IDs and they get their free meal.
