FRACKVILLE -- A retired employee of a coal company in Schuylkill County is charged with theft, accused of stealing nearly $400,000 from where he worked.

Mark Wolfe, 62, of Frackville spent decades working at the Gilberton Coal Company in Mahanoy Township, close to 30 years. He was the company's financial controller. He retired in 2014.

This year, an audit revealed missing money and soon, state police got involved.

Investigators discovered $400,000 in missing money and when they questioned him, they say Wolfe admitted to the theft and told them he used the money for "home improvements” and "high-end luxury items for his wife."

State police say Wolfe used different methods to swipe the money, including forging checks and pocketing petty cash.

After admitting to the crime, investigators say Wolfe signed over his 401k to the Gilberton Coal Company as restitution.

Newswatch 16 tried to speak to Wolfe, but he refused to comment.

Wolfe was arraigned on Tuesday and is free on $100,000 bail. He is due back in court November 25.
