STROUDSBURG -- A busy bridge connects the boroughs of East Stroudsburg and Stroudsburg in Monroe County.

Since 2007, it’s been called the Veterans Memorial Bridge, but you might not know it except for one small marker.

Borough officials say it was a local veteran who thought the bridge needed something more, and suggested flags.

"I thought that was a great idea. PennDOT gave their immediate approval on that and then we were able to get our public works crews out to get them up. I think it really does dress up the bridge,” said Stroudsburg borough manager Cathryn Thomas.

There’s one for the Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard, and one to represent those who never made it home.

Officials from both boroughs gathered for a rededication ceremony at the foot of the bridge with local vets.

“I think it's extremely important that the veterans get recognized for the service that they've done and that we always remember what this country was founded on,” said Marine veteran Lehy Kirchner.

Drivers commonly refer to this bridge by its former name -- the Interborough Bridge. Veterans are hoping these new decorations help to change that.

"I always had to say the bridge on 209 that goes into East Stroudsburg and they'd say, 'Oh, the interborough bridge,' and I'd say, 'No, it's the veteran's bridge,'” said Kirchner.

Glendalis Vazquez lives in Stroudsburg and has many family members in the service. She things the new decor may help folks remember the bridge’s actual name.

"It maybe would now, yeah, now it's like drawing attention to it, so, yeah,” said Vazquez.

They hope this gives folks a reason to pause and remember those who have served amid the daily hustle.

"Whenever I go over this bridge moving forward, I will always look for the American flag and the flag that says United States Army,” said Army veteran Claudette Williams.
