LACEYVILLE -- Preparations are underway for crews to begin repairs on railroad tracks in Wyoming County.

The tracks, which cross over Church Street in Laceyville, are scheduled to be repaired starting on Monday for about a week. As a result, the bridge that crosses over the Susquehanna River will be closed and drivers will need to utilize a 22-mile detour.

The detour requires drivers to utilize Route 6 to Wyalusing where they would cross the Susquehanna River, followed by driving back roads, including Route 2001 and Route 4004.

Paul Moss makes the drive from Jenningsville to Laceyville every day to pick up all the necessities. But his ten-minute drive is about to get a whole lot longer.

"I'll have to go out of my way, I guess," said Moss. "I'll either go to Wyalusing or Meshoppen."

It's not the actual bridge that's being repaired, It's right where the train tracks meet and cross over the road. Crews will replace those tracks and repave where they cross.

"I hear it's only going to be for a week so I'm hoping it's not going to be too bad," said Louise Kling of Forkston Township.

"There should be a way to get on the bridge," argued Kern Dibble of Meshoppen. "Even if they build a little detour around it. They should be able to get to the bridge. It's too far for people to travel."

Eugene Franklin lives on one side of the bridge and works as a welder on the other side. He's optimistic that walking over the bridge for the mile commute won't be that bad.

"I don't think it's going to be too bad, but if you interview me after it, I could tell you more about it," chuckled Franklin.

That road work is scheduled to start on Monday and wrap up on November 1.

Railway officials told us that during repairs, people will only be able to walk over the bridge when work is not being done.

Railways officials are hopeful that if weather cooperates with them, the bridge could reopen as early as next Thursday.
