SUNBURY -- If you're driving through parts of central Pennsylvania this month, you may notice a certain color theme among many of the storefronts. That's because more than 50 businesses in Union, Snyder, and Northumberland Counties are thinking pink for breast cancer awareness.

Stores are known to change their window displays frequently, but this month, many have the same theme: breast cancer awareness.

More than 50 businesses in Snyder, Union, and Northumberland Counties are "Painting the Valley Pink" by decorating in the color that symbolizes breast cancer awareness.

"We are a women's boutique and we felt that it was very important to support such an important cause," Randy Maslow-Grindlinger said.

The decorated windows aren't just for show. These businesses are in a contest sponsored by a local radio station to see who has the best decorated windows.

"When we heard the radio station was doing the contest and we're right on Market Street, we of course wanted to be a part of this. It's so important that we spread as much awareness as possible," Rose Stump said.

Even though the winner of the contest gets free advertising on the radio station WQKX, many businesses say it's not about winning.

"It's about helping everybody become more aware at all times and being a really active, supportive community partner," Stump said.

Some business owners say they decorated for personal reasons.

"I have several friends myself that have gone through and succeeded breast cancer," Ed Wentz said.

"I think businesses should be proud of themselves for what they've done," Susan Morroni said.

Susan Morroni of Northumberland says she enjoys looking at all of the decorated windows.

"I've had several friends who have had breast cancer and it's touched their lives in ways that changed them very much," Morroni said.

The winner of the contest will be announced next week, and some of the judges include breast cancer survivors.
