RYAN TOWNSHIP -- Those pictures from the Ryan Township Fire Department Facebook page show the wreckage from a crash that officials say started with a police chase early Sunday morning.

Troopers said Mahanoy City police were following a driver who lost control when he reached this curve on Brockton Road in Ryan Township.

Firefighters said the SUV crossed the center line and hit another vehicle with three women inside.

Kevin Boyer lives nearby.

"It was terribly violent, the front bumpers were pushed back to the bumpers on both cars. It was a terrible accident," said Kevin Boyer, Ryan Township.

Police said after the crash, the driver they were chasing took off on foot.

Boyer says at first officers suspected he might be the driver.

"They actually asked me to come out of the bush, and I thought what is going on? That's when he told us they were looking for someone," said Boyer.

Officials said the driver was arrested when police spotted him on Route 54.

Four people were taken to the hospital.

One from the SUV that was being chased and the three women in the vehicle that was hit head-on.

No word on their injuries or conditions.

A co-worker identified one of the injured women as Charlotte Shields who worked as a hostess at a nearby golf course.

Her neighbor said the news is upsetting.

"She is a lovely lovely person, we are all very sorry to hear she was in an accident,I hope that she and everyone is all right and they are in our thoughts and in our prayers," said Ann Rightus, neighbor.

Troopers and Mahanoy City Borough Police continue to investigate the crash.
