NANTICOKE -- The deadly shooting in Umpqua Community College is now the 45th shooting at a school just this year.

This is an alarming statistic to students in Luzerne County.

Some Luzerne County Community College students said as they walked on their campus just 24 hours after the shooting in Oregon, they tried to focus on their studies. However, what was truly at top of their minds is what happened in Oregon.

"Anywhere around here it can happen. honestly it does hit close to home," said LCCC Freshman Alexa Hager.

"It's scary that you have a whole life ahead of you and someone can just come in and ruin it," added LCCC Freshman Paige Yamelski.

At least nine people are dead and another seven injured after a gunman opened fire Thursday afternoon at Umpqua Community College in Oregon.

"Congress will probably have another moment of silence. When we get back next week, and I like many Americans will be sitting there extremely frustrated saying  'we don't need silence, we need action'," said Pennsylvania Congressman Tim Murphy (R).

Student at LCCC share the congressman's sentiment saying they want to feel safe again.

"Stronger background checks, um.. mental health definitely needs to be a factor," said LCCC student Leif Chalouhi.

While there appears to be no decisive answer on how to stop mass shootings from happening, there are at least ways to prepare students on the worst case scenario: that one of those shootings happens LCCC.

"Our procedure specifically outlines what to do if you are in a classroom and something like this were to occur or if you are standing out here. and there is an active shooter on campus," said Bill Barrett, the Director of Safety and Security at LCCC.

LCCC recommends, students watch this video, called 'Run, Hide, Fight.' It demonstrates what to do if you are anywhere where there is an active shooting.
