SCRANTON -- Our area’s annual “Race for the Cure” is marking a milestone this month, celebrating 25 years. This year an 18-year-old from Lackawanna County might just have the right motivational message to inspire you to get involved.

Newswatch 16's Ryan Leckey was live in Scranton as the city geared up for the event.

Within the 25 years of the race, Susan G. Komen Northeastern Pennsylvania's affiliate has granted awards totally $160,178 to a multitude of organizations including, Allied Services Foundation, Candy's Place, The Wright Center, Jersey Shore Hospital, and Thyra M. Humphrey's Center for Breast Health.

Up to 75% of the income from the race stays in our area to fund vital breast cancer health education and breast cancer screening and treatment programs.

The remaining income supports Komen's national research and training grants program.

Plus, Ryan had the opportunity to speak with Brittney Beadle, an 18 year old breast cancer survivor who continues to fight today.
