SUGARLOAF TOWNSHIP -- Two landmark silos in Luzerne County are coming down. Crews began taking apart the structures on the former Pecora's dairy farm near Conyngham.

While many in the area are sad to see the silos go, they'll be put to better use elsewhere.

The two silver silos have been on the former Pecora's dairy farm property for more than 30 years. Many people who live in Sugarloaf Township say they've grown into landmarks for the area.

George Barron has owned a nearby gas station for 50 years. It's less than a mile away from the silos he and has seen them just outside his window every day since they were built.

"When they had the dairy store going, I would just tell the people how to get to the dairy store. 'Head for the silos,'" laughed Barron.

But now Barron won't be able to use the silo as a cue for directions.

Farmers are working to dismantle them and within a few days they will be completely gone.

"Driving down the road, you've always seen them," said Jennifer McCracken. "Now you'll still have the blue ones. (But) it will be sad to see them gone. It'll be different."

Once the silos come down, at least one of them will be repurposed into three smaller silos for Mennonite farmers in New Jersey.

"It's bittersweet, but you know there was always changes every decade or so here on the farm and it's time for another change here," said farm owner Jim Pecora.

Pecora now owns the former dairy farm that is still a small family farm. He says they closed the dairy store in 2007 and haven't used the silos since.

He donated the silos to the Mennonite farmers so they'll get some use. He says the other two silos are also up for grabs if anyone wants them.

"So, if anyone is interested in the blue ones they can have them," Pecora said.

The silos are being taken down piece by piece. Pecora expects it will be a few days before the silos completely vanish from view.
