LAUREL RUN -- For more than 100 years, racers have been trying to be the fastest to the top of a hill in Luzerne County.

The Giants Despair Hill Climb Race near Wilkes-Barre is the oldest event of its kind in the country.

The course climbs 650 feet over the course of a mile, and includes several sharp turns including "The Devil's Elbow."

This year, a driver will compete in memory of Donnie Bachman.

Bachman was well-known for keeping an eye on crime in his neighborhood. He was shot in front of his home in Wilkes-Barre in May. Bachman's killer has not been caught yet.

Friends got Bachman's corvette to run and decorated it in his memory.

"It's a tragedy what happened. He's gone way too soon. This is what he wanted. He wanted the car to run and it's running," said Bill Feist of Laurel Run.

The hill climb continues tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday in Luzerne County.
