LANSFORD -- For the second year in a row volunteers are planting flowers and vegetables in the Lansford community garden.

The sun shone down on about a dozen volunteers including some hard working youngsters working to better their community in Carbon County.

"It's been helping to teach kids how to plant, how to garden, giving them lots of skills in a safe place to be able to come together and actually have a good time together," said the organizer of the community garden, Jodi Mika.

The Lansford community garden is on Center Street.

This is the second year the volunteers have come together to grow a variety of fruits and vegetables to share with the community.

"I think it's good because I grew up here and there's not that much to do, and it's kind of a shame.  So it's good to have more stuff," said Kylie Herlihy, a volunteer.

"It's really nice to have.  My wife brings the kids out on the weekends and it teaches the kids something about pride in their community," explained Mayor James Romankow.

All the materials are donated by people throughout the community.

A new piece of equipment was added to the community garden, a water tank. Organizers say it's something they really needed because last year they had to find other ways to water their plants.

"Last year we had no way of getting water except for our generous neighbors. We carried buckets upon buckets of water last year so this year it's nice. We have a big water tank and the fire company comes and fills it up for us. So it's a blessing," said Mika.

"You have to have everything to make one thing. It's the little things that count," said Herlihy.

Organizers hope to start harvesting in a few weeks. That's when people can come to the garden and share in the bounty.
