Newswatch 16 stopped by Flag Day ceremonies in Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties Sunday.

The 911 Memorial Committee of Lackawanna County led the salute of Old Glory on Courthouse Square in Scranton. They also observed the 240th anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Army.

The American flag is just slightly younger, having been adopted on June 14, 1777.

The Stars and Stripes were also honored in Wilkes-Barre.

State, federal and local leaders were on hand at Kirby Park for Raise the Flag Day.

The ceremony honored the flag, military, veterans, law enforcement, firefighters, and EMS.

Organizers say it's important to remember what the flag has stood for for more than two centuries.

President Woodrow Wilson established June 14 as Flag Day back in 1916.
